Jutland Exhibition Guide Book

  • The NMRN is producing a publication to support the major anniversary exhibition on the Battle of Jutland: ’36 Hours: Jutland 1916: the Battle that Won the War’. The book aims to capture and share new research by the Museum and its partners in the exhibition: into the immediate experience, impact and legacy of the Battle in 1916, and into the physical records of the Battle that survive to 2015. This will be the first – and very likely the last – time that such a rich collection of over 250 items relating to the Battle is drawn together, with significant material contributed by museums and by private lenders which has never been exhibited before. The publication will record this material and provide also a richly illustrated catalogue of such a significant exhibition. Contributors include:

    1. Introductions: Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director-General, NMRN[i], Diane Lees, Director-General, Imperial War Museum
    1. Introductory essay – Nick Hewitt, Exhibition Director[ii]
    1. Individual essays
    • ‘Skagerrakschlacht’, Dr Stephan Huck, Deutsches Marinemuseum
    • ‘Mapping the British casualties of Jutland’, Dr Brad Beaven & Dr Melanie Bassett, University of Portsmouth
    • ‘Jutland’s Victoria Crosses’ Kate Clements, Historian, Imperial War Museum
    • ‘The Archaeology of Jutland: 2015’ Dr Anthony Firth, Fjodr Ltd
    • ‘Jutland’s surviving ship: HMS Caroline’ Andrew Baines, Head of Historic Ships, NMRN
    • ‘Jutland’s surviving aircraft: Short Type 184’, David Morris, Curator of Naval Aircraft, NMRN
