Britain’s most famous admiral, Nelson was the hero of the country’s greatest naval victory against the French in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar. Tragically, he was killed in the battle aboard his ship, HMS Victory.

His distraught sailors, wanting to preserve his body for a state funeral at St. Paul’s in London, pickled his body in a barrel full of rum for the voyage from Gibraltar.
